In the summer of 1983 we moved to Watford City, ND. While walking, I discovered a discarded cassette tape in a ditch. This was music unlike any I'd ever heard and it gave me hope. The cassette was Kraftwerk (The Man Machine). Story appears in the chapter titled, "What For Watford."
In 1984, in 11th grade, I had money in pocket working at the Piggly Wiggly. My appearance really became important to me and I began ordering clothing inspired by Duran Duran from Spiegel and Banana Republic catalogs. I believe I was the first teenage boy to wear a pink shirt in Watford City history.
This was the first hip hop ("Break dance") song that started it all for me that my cousin Jon brought with him from MN when he visited the summer of 1984.
Winter of 1984. When the band didn't show up to provide live entertainment, the manager approached me in a panic, asking if I'd breakdance for the rowdy rednecks in the bar. He offered $50 and a prime rib dinner. This was the song I chose (as I put my life in my hands) that night. Referenced in the chapter titled, "Breakdancin' Dana Hansen."
